My Birthday & My Mammogram
Today, I turn 42. My gift to myself? This blissfully single birthday girl has her first mammogram.
I’m actually overdue. I’ve had the script for close to two years now.
Accordingly, with mammogram age guidelines recommending women should start at 40, my gynecologist gave me the prescription right when I turned 40.
Honestly, I was scared to have the test done. Like most women, a scary thought emerges: “My God, what if it comes back positive?” I don’t know about you, but my mind tends to go the darkest places.
However, I’m then reminded that with breast cancer, early detection saves lives. It’s better to tackle an issue early, than do nothing and encounter an even larger problem.
In addition to all this, I’m a singe mom of two boys. I owe it to my children to take care of myself.
So today, on my birthday, I decide to do it. I get over my fears. I put on a pretty dress (with no bra, LOL) and make my way to a mammogram place near me to get my boobs checked.
In all seriousness though, as women, we need to take care ourselves. Getting that yearly mammogram is key to helping to ensure that we are around as long as possible for the people we love.
Take care yourselves … and those breasts.
Blissfully Single and Yours,
